Electrolysis Hair Removal: What To Expect

Electrolysis is a unique method of permanent hair removal. It uses a process where an electrical current or a solution of sodium hydroxide is used to destroy the dermal papilla (hair roots) using small needles. It prevents hair follicle growth permanently. As a result, you can achieve hairless and smooth skin forever.

The process is pretty slow. Thus, it usually requires multiple treatments. Since it's an expensive and irreversible procedure, it's crucial to do your research before deciding to get an electrolysis hair removal treatment. Read on to know what to expect and to determine if it’s the right choice for you.

Before The Treatment

The first step is an initial consultation with an experienced electrolysis practitioner. It usually involves:

  • Identifying your treatment needs
  • A skin examination
  • Discussion regarding the expected results
  • Medical history assessment

It's your opportunity to clearly discuss all your concerns and treatment options to achieve your desired results. It's best not to hide anything, such as skin conditions, so the Electrologist can decide the best approach for you.

During The Session

There are three different methods of electrolysis that are used for treatment: Thermolysis, Galvanic electrolysis, and a blend of both.

Among these, the thermolysis method is considered the least painful as it uses localized heat to destroy the root of hair follicles. Whereas Galvanic electrolysis involves a chemical process to stop unwanted hair growth. The blending method involves combining both methods for destroying hair growth cells for the best results.

The process can be somewhat painful, however, the extent of pain depends on your pain tolerance and the type of electrolysis method used. Therefore, it's better to mentally prepare yourself to endure some pain during the procedure.

How Does Electrolysis Hair Removal Work?

Choosing the electrolysis hair removal technique depends on the client's skin and hair types. Depending on the skin examination, the Electrologist will let you know which method will work best for you and how many electrolysis treatments will be required.

You’ll probably feel a bit of a pinch or heat in the treatment area as the process starts. Most people experience minimal discomfort. If you have a low pain tolerance or are getting treatment on a sensitive body part (i.e., bikini line), it may feel a bit more painful. However, it's not usually unbearable.

The whole process usually takes more time than laser hair removal. It can permanently remove unwanted hair, unlike a laser procedure where new hair may grow after a specified period. There will be several sessions, with each session ranging anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour. During the treatment, you can read, listen to music, or try to take a nap if it takes longer.

Aftercare and Precautions

After each session, you may notice that the hair grows slowly and shallowly in the treated area, depending on your hair growth cycle. However, they will permanently stop re-growing after the final session has been completed.

It may take a few weeks to months to get rid of all unwanted hair. After each session, the treated area may look temporarily red, swollen, and tender. It is a normal side effect that usually subsides after some time.

Here are a Few Precautions and Aftercare Tips You Should Follow After The Electrolysis Treatment:

  1. Apply a cold compress to the treated area to ease the swelling.
  2. It is recommended to refrain from using makeup, deodorants, or any other skincare products on the treated area before and after the procedure. It may cause irritation or allergic reactions. Thus, you should let the area heal before using any such products.
  3. Do not get your dark hair bleached or waxed before the procedure. If you have fully grown dark-colored body hair, it's easier to spot them for performing electrolysis. Thus, throughout the treatment period, it's best to avoid any other hair removal methods.
  4. After the process, your skin will be very tender and sensitive. Therefore, it is usually recommended to prevent exposure to sunlight before and after the procedure for at least 48 to 72 hours.
  5. The treated area may feel itchy and sore after the procedure. However, it is recommended to avoid scratching or touching your skin excessively.
  6. You can use tea tree oil or any other recommended ointment to soothe your skin to keep it moisturized and sterilized.
  7. It is best to avoid activities that may cause excessive sweating such as exercising, going out in the sun, sauna, etc. You should also avoid swimming.
  8. If you have any other concerns, you should not hesitate to ask the electrologist.
To ensure you achieve the desired results, it's best to stay patient and don’t try to rush the process. Also, you should not skip any appointments as it may cause the process to be much longer than originally planned.

Consult With A Highly Experienced Electrolysis Professional

The Electrolysis treatment may not be ideal for everyone, so it's crucial to consult with a professional. The success rate and quality of results can drastically improve if it's performed by a skilled electrologist. Therefore, you should find a board-certified, highly qualified, and experienced professional for electrolysis hair removal.
